Friedly’s Treats (a Short Halloween Story)

Category : Distractions

Joshua hated Halloween. He once loved costumes and jack o’lanterns and candy. But now he dreaded the holiday.

Outside, trick-or-treaters giggled and climbed Mrs. Friedly’s porch steps. The shuddering knock sent shivers down Joshua’s spine. He squeezed his eyes shut.

The door creaked open. Cool air swept the foyer.

Guttural voices cried, “Trick or treat!”.

“Aren’t you fearsome!” Mrs. Friedly beamed at the anxious little monsters. “I’ve something extra special for you.”

Joshua squirmed as she lifted him, but the ropes around his hands and feet held tight. The gag muffled his screams. Grinning sweetly, Mrs. Friedly plopped him into one of the yawning treat bags.

“Oh, dear!” She pursed her lips. “I’m afraid I’m all out of treats. I don’t have enough for each of you.”

A disappointed groan rose from the beasties.

“Oh, I know!” The kindly-looking woman snapped her fingers and ducked into the house. She reappeared minutes later.

She dropped shiny treats into the other bags.

Wide-eyed, Joshua watched over the edge of the bag.

“Here you go!” Mrs. Friedly said. “Remember to share.”

Thanking the old woman, the hideously-masked trick-or-treaters skipped down the sidewalk, Joshua in one bag, butcher knives and meat cleavers in the others.

Zombies

Here’s a spooky (but true!) story for you …

A few years back, my little brother started making life-sized zombies out of common stuff he found around the house. The zombies looked great (even though I found it a little distrubing that they often wore my hand-me-down clothing) and I asked him to create a couple of these fashion-challenged ghouls for me. I use them as decorations every Halloween, and they made great props at conventions.

Right after the zombies were first shipped to me, I packed them up in my car and headed to a convention. I propped one of the zombies in the passenger seat and delighted at the shocked looks and double-takes from the drivers and passengers of other cars.

As the road trip dragged on, I got a little bored and decided to up the ante a bit. I unrolled the passenger side window and waited for the next car to pass. As the car drove by, I reached over and shoved the zombie towards the window, as though it were leaping out of the seat. The other driver jumped and nearly lost control of his vehicle.

What fun!

So I took great pleasure in frightening car after car with my pet zombie. I shook the monster until his greenish head lolled out the window like a hungry beast. Soon, I spotted a long line of cars approaching. As I terrorized them, I noticed how shocked and horror-stricken my victims were becoming. Each person looked more appalled than the next … and I thought I noticed a few tears! I must have been getting really good at zombie puppeteering.

I giggled like a school kid as my undead passenger lurched and jumped and frightened every car that passed …

Including the hearse.

That’s right–I’d been using the effigy of a dead person to accost a funeral procession.

There are times in every man’s life when he realizes he is the biggest jerk on the planet at that given moment. This was my time to shine. Needless to say, I rolled up the window and drive the rest of the way to the convention in contemplative silence. Since then, I’ve tried to do good things to atone for my actions, but I probably have a few more elderly ladies to help across the street before I work those years in Purgatory off.

Take what you will from this tale of woe, and remember … Happy Halloween!

The Return of the Attack of Even More Damned Reviews

Category : Uncategorized

The signing at The Fantasy Shop went pretty well for a dreary, rainy night. Apparently, the St. Charles store sold out of the first issue last week and had to call around to the other shops to get a supply in for last night. A few of the folks who had purchased the book last week stopped by to tell us how much they enjoyed it. That’s a pretty good feeling.

Another review of the first issue posted online. You can read all about right here.

Origin Story

Category : Comics, Events & Appearances

Tonight, Brian and I will be signing copies of The Damned #1 at the Fantasy Shop in St. Charles, Missouri. In a way, this will be a “return to the beginning” for us. Years ago, we both worked for the Fantasy Shop. That’s where we met and started brainstorming ideas for comics when we should have been working. The store’s no longer located in the haunted riverfront building where we worked so many years ago, but I’m sure some of the memories still linger in the place like lonely ghosts. And while their customer base is probably still a little more focused on superheroes instead of demonic mobsters, maybe Brian will keep quiet long enough for me to charm the average shopper to our cause. I’ve known him for eleven years, and I still haven’t given up hope.

In the meantime, here’s a review of the comic that appeared on Ain’t It Cool News.

The Damned

Remember Christmas when you were a kid? You wait for weeks to open your presents. You wake up at 2:00 AM … and 3:00 AM … and 4:00 AM on the big day. You attack the pile of loot in the way a starving man might attack a turkey leg. And, within minutes, you’re surrounded by Shogun Warriors and Micronauts and Rom: Spaceknight and a wasteland of shredded wrapping paper. Within minutes, it’s over.

Yesterday, the first issue of The Damned hit the stands, and Brian and I were on hand at Star Clipper to sign copies. The signing went well. Star Clipper sold a bunch of copies, and I was able to meet a lot of new readers. But even though we were there for several hours, it went by so quickly! Leaving left me feeling excited and energized to work on some of my other projects, but I was also a little sad, too.

I guess that’s my lot in life …

A couple of more reviews for the book have popped up, including an evolving review by a whole bunch of folks over on Jinxworld Forums. Others include:
