Rapid Fire Movie Review #3: The Grudge 2

Category : Interviews and Reviews

The setup: Buffy has apparently lost her slayer powers, and it’s up to her little sister to confront the spirit of rage that’s killing anyone who sets foot in her haunted house.

My thoughts: The first Grudge was pretty scary, although the story was almost non-existent. Instead, the viewer was treated to loads of spooky imagery and ghostly murders–Cullen Candy to be sure. Someone walked into the haunted house, and soon enough, they were being tormented by the spirits of a mother and a little boy who were killed in a fit of rage. The sequel is more of the same, although I didn’t find the spooky happenings all that … well … spooky. If you just can’t get enough of The Grudge, I’d suggest going with the orginal Japanese versions. This wasn’t bad, but it didn’t have me jumping at shadows, either.

Rapid Fire Movie Review #2: The Brothers Grimm

Category : Distractions, Interviews and Reviews

Don’t think I’m wasting my time watching movies instead of writing. I’ve been writing my little fingers to the bone … just every now and again I need to take a break. Even when I’m vegging in front of the TV, I keep my laptop or a notebook handy should inspiration strike! In the meantime, here’s another quick review of the movies I’m watching.

The setup: The Brothers Grimm are a pair of con artists who travel the countryside capitalizing on the superstitious fears of the common folk … until they stumble onto an all-too-real and all-too-dark fairy tale.

My thoughts: I was pretty disappointed in this one. It wasn’t bad, I suppose, but I had really, really high hopes (a sure sign that I’m going to be let down). This was a good-looking film, and parts of it were suitably creepy and surreal. But in the end, it felt a little too frantic and disjointed to me. I almost bought it when it came out on DVD. I’m glad I watched it on Encore instead.

Rapid Fire Movie Review: The Descent, Unrated Edition

Category : Distractions, Interviews and Reviews

The setup: Six attractive women go spelunking in an unstable cave system occupied by a family of Golem’s uglier, meaner cousins.

My thoughts: This movie scared me, mainly because I’m often invited to go on caving trips with beautiful girls. There are some genuinely tense moments, especially early on, and writer/director Neil Marshall does a pretty good job conveying a sense of claustrophobia and disorientation. The story isn’t the most shockingly original, but the execution (and the executions) makes this a mighty fine horror flick.
