I always love to read reviews of my work, but sometimes a reviewer writes something that brings a big smile to my face. In this case, SFSite.com pretty much nailed what I was hoping for with The Damned: Prodigal Sons when this was posted:
” … A family drama that Lovecraft might have approved of — if he’d only been Mickey Spillane.”

My friend and sometimes co-writer, Shawn, sent me a link to the this short video, which I believe illustrates how the perception of a story can change completely if the tone of the summary is wrong. Those of you who (like me) are putting together proposals for editors and agents, take note: make sure the mood of your work comes across in the proposal, or the reader might miss the point of your masterpiece.
There are a bunch of re-cut film trailers on YouTube … some fun, some kinda lame, but it’s something you might be interested in checking out. The Scary Poppins clip is fun, as is the Sleepless in Seattle, but is there really a reason to re-work Willy Wonka as a horror movie? That film freaked me out plenty just the way it was!

Very cool news on The Damned movie front. As posted in Variety …
DreamWorks has tapped David DiGilio to adapt the Oni Press graphic novel “The Damned,” by Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt.
Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing via their DreamWorks-based shingle.
Described as horror-noir, “Damned” follows a Los Angeles detective who discovers that a new gang with ties to the supernatural has infiltrated the city.
Eric Gitter is also producing via his Closed on Mondays Entertainment, the film production arm of Oni Press Mark. Peter Schwerin will exec produce.
DiGilio wrote “Eight Below” for Disney and was creator of ABC series “The Traveler.”

So, I know of at least a half dozen people who got whammied by the Utah Death Plague after World Horror Convention. It’s no fun, let me tell you. It knocked me out of commission for the last week. The timing couldn’t have been worse, considering how excited I was over numerous writing projects. Thank goodness I’m starting to feel at least a little better. I’m not tip-top just yet, and I still spend a good portion of each evening trying to avoid coughing up a lung. But at least I can manage to get a little writing done again.
Currently working on:
- The Autumn Kingdom (a young adult dark fantasy novel) – outline stage
- All-Out Monster Throw-Down in Catfish Flats (short story) – final draft
- The Damned: Prodigal Sons (issue 3) – minor rewrites
- The Hollows (graphic novel) – scripting

I said this one would be the last. I vowed I’d never attend WHC again, not after the debacle that was the 2007 show. I pledged that no one would ever — ever — get me in Canada again.
But damn if I’m not re-thinking that.
I had such a good time in Salt Lake City, I’m considering embarking to the Frozen North when the convention hits Winnipeg next year. Congrats and thanks to Charlie and everyone else who managed to breathe new life into a convention I thought might be on its last wobbly legs.
Here’s a quick breakdown of some of the highlights from the trip.
