Baker’s Dozen Interview

Category : Comics, Interviews and Reviews, The Damned

Brian and I sat down with Revolution SF to talk about The Damned, demons, reality, and the current market for souls on eBay.

It’s been said the in order to get anything published, you must sell your soul. How much of Eddie comes from your personal and professional life experiences?

Brian Hurtt: The process of doing this comic has been entirely painless. We have a great relationship with Oni (I’d done several projects with them prior to this) and when they said yes to the pitch they more or less cut us loose on the book. Their input has been minimal and always put forth as questions rather than edicts. The Oni philosophy has always been to hire the creators they like and trust and then let them do what they do. It’s a great way to work.

Eddie is a bitter, tired, and pessimistic soul. He’s entirely based on Cullen.

Cullen Bunn: I tried to sell Brian’s soul on eBay, but the highest bidder failed to pay. I didn’t get a single bite on it when posted to Craigslist, either. I finally gave his soul away on Freecycle so it wouldn’t clutter my garage.

Working on The Damned seems a bit surreal, because it has been so easy, and I’m grateful every day for the experience. Brian and Oni Press are great to work with. My only fear is that I’ve been spoiled by how well this has gone. I can only hope that all the other projects I work on will be as rewarding.

Comics vs. Prose – Picking a Side

Category : Uncategorized

Time for some changes.  Time to pick a side.

For years now, I’ve tried to balance a career … and writing prose … and writing comics. That’s like having three full-time jobs and, frankly, it’s been sitting like an iron boot heel upon my throat for some time.  Tilting one windmill is trying enough.  Tilting a couple at the same time is down right maddening.

I’ve been kicking around the idea of putting a moratorium on my prose efforts for some time, and it looks like I’m finally ready to take that step.  Don’t get me wrong. I love writing short stories and novels. I like telling stories regardless of the medium. But by splitting my creative activities in too many directions, they all suffer. A cold evaluation of the facts tells me I’ve been most successful in comics, I’ve got enough comic projects on deck to keep me busy for a long time to come, and I will most certainly lose my mind if I keep trying to juggle all these feral cats.

Not to mention, I’m getting a real kick out of the collaborative nature of comics. Sure, tracking down reliable, talented artists to work with is a daily challenge. But I feel like a kid on Christmas morning whenever I see something I’ve written brought to life by an illustrator. That’s a rush I don’t think prose delivers … at least not for me.

I’ll likely still dabble in prose–primarily short stories–from time to time, but that’s going to take a back seat to scripting funny books.  I’ve still got a few short stories awaiting publication, and I’ll still crow when something hits the shelves, but I’ve got to turn my attention on the spot where I can do the most damage.

And, hey, it’ll be nice to have a little less stress and a little more time to spend with my wife.

No Guts, No Glory Saturday!

So, the mail came today, and I know how I’ll be spending tomorrow morning.  I’m going to get up before daybreak, fix myself a nice bowl of cereal, and settle down on the couch to watch the pure 80s cartoon bliss that is The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers, which just came out in a DVD box set.  I actually remember very little about this show, except that I thought it was very cool when it aired way back when … and that superpowered space cowboys rode robotic horses across alien landscapes in the name of justice. That has to touch on at least six of my ten requirements for a great cartoon!  Here’s hoping it holds up!

Like a Chinese Tattoo Review

Category : Interviews and Reviews

Dark Scribe Magazine has posted a review of Like a Chinese Tattoo.

An excerpt regarding my novella, “Remains” …

“Remains” is a marvelous tale, at once chilling and heartbreaking, told from the POV of a teenage boy whose suspicions about the mysterious stranger who comes to work on his family’s farm come to tragic fruition. Bunn shows real talent here, capturing that period between adolescence and manhood with genuine authenticity. He deftly maneuvers between the horror and humanity of the story in a style reminiscent of early Stephen King (think It or “The Body”) and imbues the story with a deep emotional resonance that never detracts from the horror yet stays with the reader long after the last word.

I’m in total agreement with the reviewer in regards to the inclusion of my gross-out story, “Granny Kisses,” in the collection.  As I was sending it in, I asked my wife if I was cheapening the book for everyone involved.  She might have said something along the lines of, “That’s your gift.  You’re like King Midas that way,” but I went ahead and sent the gross-out entry anyhow.  Maybe I should have written a short intro to the story.

Nonetheless, I think the review is quite well done, and you can read it in its entirety by clicking here.
