The script is complete.
As it stands, The Hollows OGN will clock in at more than 200 pages. That’s 300 or so pages of script, chock full of strange rites performed in the dead of night, sinister backwoods folk, and hideous transfigurations.
At times, this was a very difficult story to write. Talk about a change of pace from The Damned! Not only was I dealing with one contiuous yarn (as opposed to a series of single issues comprising a larger story) , but it was so much more dark than the demon-noir of The Damned. What’s that? Darker than soul trafikking and blood sacrifices. Yeah … and then some. There were at least a couple of times when I was angry at myself for the darkness of the story.
I also tried to challenge myself to write the book a little differently. I was working with fewer panels-per-page than I have grown accustomed to, because I want the art to have a little breathing room to build all-important atmosphere. In addition, I avoided using captioned inner monologues for the main character, Cole, because the last thing I want is to come off like The Damned’s Eddie in the Ozarks.
All in all, though, it was still a real pleasure to write, and I’m really pleased how it turned out. I’ll be sharing more with you as time goes by. For the here and now, I’ll leave you with a whippoorwill by illustrator Jeremy Haun.
