Art Gallery – Mighty Men and Monsters

Category : Art Gallery, Slave to Nostalgia

While these aren’t actual made-from-scratch-fresh-from-the-oven drawings, I found them in my garage along with a bunch of other artwork.  These images were created using one of my favorite childhood toys, the Mighty Men and Monster Maker.  If you’re unfamiliar with this 1978 gem, I feel terribly sorry for you.  Basically, budding artists could create superheroes, aliens, and monsters by combining head, torso, and leg tiles.  Of all the great toys I loved, this one comes close to matching my affection for The Micronauts.

I must have created thousands of creatures, covering my bedroom with them like wallpaper, but here are the few that remained in my files:

A terrible tag team of creatures — one from the depths of space, one from the depths of Hell!  The green guy kinda reminds me of Cthulhu as a marauding space invader.

Same body as the demon shown above, only with a three-eyed, three-tongued head and a nasty, bumpy hide.

And then we have this fellow … a “mighty man,” I suppose, that I can only call Count Clementine, due to his Dracula good looks and fetching orange pants.

Anyhow … I’m glad I still had these images in my files.  They certainly bring back memories of simpler times and hours spent daydreaming.  You can still find the Mighty Men and Monster Maker on EBay from time to time.  There was also a “fashion show” version of the toy made for girls.  No monsters, just frilly dresses.  You know, so girls could plan out their prom outfits and stuff.

Looks like the designers of MOTU had one of those things!

Holy cow!! I was just talking about these to my Girlfriend, she had no clue what I was talking about, there was this one, and one that was trucks and cars, one that was Heros and Knights and such, and one that was clothes I think… not sure if that one was for girls or not, but we had them all in the hospital I grew up in. They were so epic.

Oh, man! I had those! My friends and I in Iowa would spend hours drawing comics and I’d break these out now and then for help designing costumes.

Totally forgot about those…

Oh how I loved this toy/game – I wish I still had mine, but I really wish I still had some of my art, like you do! The late 70’s were a great time for these kind of genre toys!
