Closing the Books on 2009

Category : Uncategorized

No long post tonight. There are celebrations to be had, and I don’t want to keep you from them.

A lot’s changed for me in the last 10 years. Most importantly, I became a husband and a father. I’m thankful every day for the support of my wife, Cindy, and for my new little buddy, Jackson. I can’t explain to them how much joy they bring me.

Did I accomplish what I set out to accomplish ten years ago? Not at all. Not by a long mile. I missed the mark on a few things. I got lazy in the pursuit of my goals. I took my eye off the prize and got sidetracked. But I’ve been spending the last few weeks refocusing, planning, and renewing my energy reserves. In the past year, I’ve been working harder than ever before, and there’s a lot more work to do.

But not tonight.

But that’s what next year … and the next decade … is for.

Tonight, I just want to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Here’s hoping 2010 is a good one for you!

Fetch a Bucket! Cullen Bunn’s Heaveworld Available for Pre-Order!

Category : Writing

The folks at Skullvines Press have decided to unleash one final travesty on 2009. They’ve opened up pre-orders for my gross-out story collection, Cullen Bunn’s Heaveworld. At long last, you can own a piece of my personal triumph and shame!

From the book’s description:

Cullen Bunn entered the World Horror Convention’s Gross-Out Contest four times, and won first place each time. And here they are, collected for the first time in print, uncut and sure to get your bile rising.

But that’s not all…

The Midway County Testicle Festival is underway!

But in Cullen’s vomit-inducing novella, “Great Balls of Ire,” Mr. Blue has reason to be superstitious of the event’s thirteenth year.

The morning kicks off with a dead body in the field, and the issues escalate from there.

As a new recipe for barbeque testicles is introduced with horrifying results, Blue realizes that there is more afoot than mere food poisoning. With an ancient evil rising from the nearby woods and chaos all around him, will he have the balls to save not only the festival, but the entire world?

Wherein I post some updates and links I hope you’ll find interesting …

ITEM! The fourth part of my Sixth Gun Christmas story, “Them What Ails Ya,” was posted on the Oni Press blog. You can read the entire story by following these links:

ITEM! Oni announced that the first issue of The Sixth Gun will be offered as part of Free Comic Book Day 2010.

ITEM! If you want to give yourself a chill while being subjected to advertising campaigns, check out The 30 Freakiest Commercials of 2009. Some of the these TV spots are scarier than some of the horror flicks I watched last year.

ITEM! Also worth your time is Alma, a short animated film that manages to be both cute and creepy at the same time.

ITEM! I’m always interested in television scripts and series bibles, especially when we’re talking about a series as well-done as Batman: The Animated Series. Check out the series bible if you want a sneak peek at how the creators rebuilt the Batman mythos from the ground up. (All hail, Comics Alliance for pointing me in the direction of this awesome material.)

Wherein I post some updates and links I hope you’ll find interesting …

  • I almost died. Well, not really, but I felt like I was going to shed this mortal coil. I woke up before daybreak last Tuesday to the most God-awful pain ever. I’m usually pretty good with pain. In the words of Dalton from Road House, “Pain don’t hurt.” But this was bad enough that I rushed to the E.R. where I proceeded to beg for mercy … pain killers … a sharp blow to the back of the skull … anything to ease the pain. The verdict? Kindney stones. I’ve sworn off soda (the probable culprit) since my encounter with soul-numbing, vomit-inducing pain. The caffeine withdrawal is bad, but I never, ever want to experience this again.
  • Moving on to happier news, Shawn Lee and I completed the epic-length script to The Tooth! Matt Kindt is busily bringing the story to life, and I can’t wait to share it with you!
  • The third part of my Sixth Gun Christmas story, “Them What Ails Ya,” was posted on the Oni Press blog. Part 4 should be posted this week. You can read the story so far by following these links:
  • Robot 6 posted one of the first interviews about The Sixth Gun (comics and prose) here.
  • Evileye Books announced that they will be publishing RAZE, a cross platform dark fantasy written by Shawn Lee and myself. For a little more information on the series, check these links out:
  • Speaking of Evileye Books, they just released their first publication, and it is a great one! Mike Oliveri brings you The Pack: Winter Kill. I cannot recommend this book enough. Werewolf drama and action at its best. Go buy it. Now.
  • We’re barreling towards a new year, and lots of folks will be planning for their future success. Dumb Little Man posted 20 Powerful Beliefs That Will Push You Towards Success. You should give it a read.
  • Writer and music lover B. Clay Moore has posted a retrospective of some of the music in 2009 that struck a cord with him. If you want to check out some new music, his posts could get the old wheels turning. Here are links to Part 1 and Part 2.

Imagine a world ravaged by unending war.
For centuries, one religion after another has raged against each other, the victor taking the mantle of the one true religion until another takes its place. The landscape is dotted with the ruins of temples and even entire cities. So many people have died over the years that the very soil cannot be tilled without turning up bone.
Now imagine that this world, already teetering on the brink of destruction, is suddenly beset by The Razing, a lethal disease that sweeps across the land, claiming the lives of all in its path.
Enter Siris and Kast.
Kast, a massive, stoic barbarian. quiet, cunning, and deadly.  He cares for nothing in this world or the next.
Siris, a cruel and beautiful healer. She is cold, calculating, and obsessed with an unfathomable agenda.
This pair of cold-hearted criminals uses the decay and chaos in the world around them to, destroy their enemies, achieve power, and line their pockets.

Today, Evileye Books announced RAZE, the upcoming cross-platform project I’m working on with Shawn Lee. This is an exciting project for me. It’s something Shawn and I have kicked around for years,  and it’s thrilling to see it come to life as a series of graphic and prose novels.
