This Week’s Obsessions 1/12/2013

Here’s a quick rundown of the things I’m obsessed with this week!

Scalped – I’ve been a little behind when it comes to finishing up this series, possibly because I really didn’t want it to end. I finally sat down to read the final trade paperback, but before doing so I decided to re-read all of the issues leading up to the finale. The series was phenomenal from beginning to end, and it wrapped up in such a tragic and heartbreaking way. Highly recommended!

Dredd – It’s rare anymore that I watch a movie, then immediately want to re-watch it. But this adaptation of Judge Dredd brought that out in me. From the soundtrack to the set design, I loved it. Karl Urban’s stoic portrayal was spot on. The flick reminded me of old school Robocop. My only complaint is that I would have loved to see more of Mega-City One. Still, what a blast!

    I’ve never read Scapled.
    I don’t know why.

    I really wanna see Dredd.
I might have to make a late-nite trip to Redbox.

When I first saw the poster for “Dredd,” I had shrugged the film off as “Oh great, another comic book movie.” But a review from a critic I generally trusted convinced me to try out the film, and I wound up loving the film. Karl Urban made Dredd look like someone who had a steel I-beam stuck up his butt, yet remained utterly fascinating. Olivia Thirlby’s Anderson made me crush on her.

More importantly, I wound up regularly checking out Douglas Wolk’s “Dredd Reckoning” blog and picking up the fifth Judge Dredd Complete Case Files collection.
