Followers of the Serpent

What follows (no pun intended) is the first piece of short fiction that I ever sold. I had been paid money to write before. My first paid writing gigs were articles for Fangoria and White Wolf Magazine. But this was the first time I’d been paid money for one of my short stories!

“Followers of the Serpent” was a Lovecraftian/western mash-up slated to appear in Eldritch Tales Magazine. The tale is an obvious homage to Joe R. Lansdale’s “Dead in the West,” a story I read (and still read) over and over again. Read More

I Rolled a 20!

A couple of new interviews have posted over the last day or two. As synchronicity would have it, both of these discussions focused a bit on my days as a gamer. It’s no secret that I spent many hours playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, Call of Cthulhu, Vampire: The Masquerade, and others. While I don;t get to game nearly as often as I used to, it’s still a hobby that I really enjoy.

Dorkland: My Life as a Gamer – I talk about everything from my earliest days gaming to comic books I’d like to see adapted to a role-playing game.

Popcorn and Novocaine: Talking With Giants – This interview covers my comics, my writing influences, and–yes–gaming.

Thanks for chekcing them out, folks! Now I’ve got to get back to planning the Descent into the Depths of the Earth campaign… er… I mean… I’ve got to get back to writing this comic script!

Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt Paper Dolls!

Now there’s a subject line I never thought I’d write!

Nevertheless, amazing artist Chris Schweizer has been creating awesome sets of paper dolls (including the cast of Sherlock and Harry Potter) and his most recent creations are dolls based on Brian and myself. I shudder to think what you little heathens are going to do with these dolls, but now is your chance to fulfill your darkest paper doll desires. Be warned, the Cullen paper doll might come to life like a Zuni Fetish Doll to chase you around your apartment late at night. Ya ya ya ya!

The Power of Hypnosis!

Anyone who knows me knows that I claim to have once performed as “the World’s Youngest Hypnotist”. My dad was a professional stage hypnotist for many years, and at one time he put me on stage as part of the act. I only vaguely remember being part of the show myself, but I do remember quite a few of my dad’s performances. Last week, I visited my folks in North Carolina, and I uncovered an old folder full of¬†memorabilia from his days as a “master of mesmerism”. I didn’t find anything¬†mentioning the amazing spectacle of the “World’s Youngest Hypnotist”, but these still stirred some really great memories. I thought I’d share. These materials are from 1973 and 1974. Read More

It’s Picture Time!

For a while now, my favorite “author photo” has been a photo my wife snapped while I was having a margarita in San Diego. I looked like I was in my element, I guess. But that shot is now a few years old and the format doesn’t really work for print and such. So… I asked talented photographer Kelly Manno to “make me look pretty.” Here’s a selection of my new author shots. I’d love to hear your thoughts on them.
