Weekend Update – 8/21/2011

Here’s the stuff you might have missed if you blinked this week!

Scaring Up Success With Cullen Bunn – I sat down with the folks from Panels on Pages to talk about The Sixth Gun, The Tooth, The Fearless, and more!

Spider-Man: Season Premiere – Marvel has posted some new details on the upcoming Spider-Man: Season One, including some sweet preview art.

Casting Speculation: The Sixth Gun TV Series – iFanboy indulges in the Internet’s favorite pastime–cast speculation, in this case regarding the upcoming adaptation of The Sixth Gun. I think it’s a pretty good dream cast.

Big News Weekend!

San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone. It was a wild, busy convention, and I had a great time. This was the first year that I’ve gone to the show and not felt like I had to beg for work. It painted the entire event in a different light for me. A bunch of announcements came out during the convention, and I want to share a few of them here.

First up, The Sixth Gun has been picked up by the Syfy Channel for development as a six-hour TV mini-series. I don’t have a lot of details on this just yet, but I’m guessing the series will cover the events of the first trade paperback. If reception is positive, it will likely go directly to an ongoing TV series. If you haven’t read the book yet, now’s a good time to start! You can purchase the first volume (and the second volume) or (if you need a little more convincing) you can read the entire first issue for free on ComiXology!

In other news, I have signed an exclusive agreement to write for Marvel. Basically, this means you’ll see my name on a lot more Marvel titles in the coming months. It does not mean, however, that I’ll have to stop writing The Sixth Gun (or the other creator-owned projects I have in the works). Marvel has been awesome to work with, and they have been very supportive of my creator-owned projects.

Speaking of Marvel, I’ll be writing a new 12-issue limited series titled The Fearless. This beast launches in October. The title spins out of the events of Fear Itself. Matt Fraction, Chris Yost, and I sat down with our editors and started discussing what would be going on in the Marvel Universe after Fear Itself. The result was The Fearless and Fear Itself Aftermath: Battle Scars. I’m not going to say much about either of these series, but I can tell you that The Fearless is a non-stop action extravaganza that tours the Marvel Universe in the most exciting way I could imagine. Valkyrie plays a huge role in the book, and I think readers will look at her differently once the title is done. It will be shipping twice a month, and it will be illustrated by Mark Bagley and Paul Pelletier.

And I don’t want to be a tease, but there will be some more big announcements coming soon! Keep your eyes peeled!

For now, I better get to work!

Weekend Update 7-17-2011

It’s been a while since I posted anything… but I have a whole bunch of good reasons.

I’m just not allowed to talk about them yet.

For those of you who know me, you realize that this is killing me. I hate keeping secrets, especially about projects I’m really excited about. But I definitely don’t want to jinx anything. I can give you a couple of hints, but they’re gonna be pretty vague at this point.

A few minutes ago, I sent the script to the fourth issue of a new comic book project to my editors. This is a pretty big deal for me, and I’ll be really happy when I can talk a little more about it. As of this writing, I’ve seen several pages of artwork from the illustrator, and it’s really awesome stuff.

I’m also preparing to start scripting issues four and five of an unannounced limited series. Again, the artwork I’ve seen on this thing has just blown me out of the water.

In addition, I’m gearing up to begin scripting a new creator-owned limited series with Oni Press. We’ve been working on getting an artist lined up for the book, and it sounds like that’s falling into place. What can I say about this one? Well, it’s a dark—the closest thing to true horror (but with a twist, of course) I’ve done in comics.

As for The Sixth Gun, I just completed the script for issue 18. Skipping ahead for various reasons, I’m writing issue 23. I should have that issue wrapped up in a week or so.

In the next few days, I’ll be tackling some more prose work, too, including a return to “Countless Haints.”

So, all in all, I’ve been pretty busy.

This week, I’m heading to San Diego for Comic-Con International. I plan on getting as much work as possible done while I’m there (usually while waiting in airports, flying in planes, and in the early morning or late night hours). I’ll be posting a signing schedule shortly.

In the meantime, here are a couple of things you might have missed:

First up, Jason Aaron and I talked a little about my transition to a full-time writer. Give it a read if you’re into that sort of thing or need to get to sleep quickly.

Secondly, I recently wrote a guest spot on Nexus Graphica that’s all about the weird western stuff you should be reading.

Get to it, hombres.

I recently did a signing tour of all the Fantasy Shop stores in St. Louis. As much as I love signings, they always end in violence and boffer weapon bloodshed.

Weekend Update, April 3

I was at comic conventions the past two weekends, and my schedule has been way off. I’m not sure how some people manage going to conventions week after week while getting work done! I need them to share some secrets with me!

Here are a few updates and interesting tidbits you might be interested in:

CBR TV interviewed Jim Zubkavich (of Skullkickers fame) and me during C2E2. I ramble on about The Sixth Gun, Fear Itself: Black Widow, and Fear Itself: The Deep!

And speaking of rambling on at C2E2, I spoke to MTV Geek about a number of projects, including Superman/Batman, The Tooth, and The Sixth Gun.

During C2E2, I participated in a panel on Horror Comics Today. They recorded the panel, and you can watch all six parts of it here:

Part One

Part Two

Part Three

Part Four

Part Five

Part Six

If you’re in the mood for a non-video interview (I know I am), you might want to give this interview with The Outhouse a read. I chatted with them about The Sixth Gun, Superman/Batman, Fear Itself, and transitioning to writing full-time.

Weekend Update, March 27

I’ve been at Planet Comicon all weekend, and I just got back home. This was my first time going to this show, and I’m not sure what I expected. But it was a phenomenal event. I really enjoyed it. That, of course, means I’m exhausted… which means this update is down to the wire!

Here are a few things you might have missed if you blinked!

A few weeks ago, Adam Warrock released a mixtape of songs based on Oni Press titles. Two of the tunes were inspired by The Sixth Gun and The Damned. Adam posted a few notes on his site that give some interesting insights into his process when it came to these songs. Check them out here.

Have you ever wondered who my five favorite Avengers are? Well, wonder no more! Here’s a quick rundown with a healthy does of nostalgia.

And now for a very special episode of the weekend update. If you haven’t heard of Shaken Manchild Syndrome, then you need to watch this. In particular, check out the reading material of choice for Shaken Manchildren (around the 13 second mark).
