INVASIVE is coming from Oni Press, written by me, illustrated by Jesus Hervas.
In an underground hospital secretly operating deep beneath the streets of a major metropolis, a radical new addiction has taken hold.
Once inside its grip, there are no rules, no oaths, and no taboos too deep to not to be broken.
The scalpel is their tool, and the alleys are their operating theater...and, together, a new class of surgeon is bent on piercing the final threshold of accepted medical orthodoxy one incision at a time.
Beyond excess, beyond ethics, beyond science...a delicate and excruciating new discipline is about to be born: the art of flesh.
Help us discover it, won't you?
From the Screen Rant announcement:
Horror mastermind Cullen Bunn and Oni Press are joining forces once again for a thought-provoking new work of terror titled Invasive. Oni Press and Bunn are currently coming hot off the heels of a successful Kickstarter campaign for another project, The Sixth Gun Deluxe Omnibus Library, and are now announcing this brand-new series ahead of San Diego Comic-Con.
Invasive is a four-part limited series coming from Eisner Award-nominated writer Cullen Bunn and artist Jesús Hervás (The Empty Man). Invasive focuses on an underground hospital secretly operating beneath the streets of a major metropolis. There, a radical new addiction takes hold of its inhabitants. Under the grasp of this mysterious addition, there are no rules, oaths, or taboos too deep to not be broken. A new class of surgeon is bent on piercing the final threshold of accepted medical orthodoxy, one incision at a time. Oni teased the series as a "radical new experiment in horror" in its announcement: "Beyond excess, beyond ethics, beyond science...a delicate and excruciating new discipline is about to be born: the art of flesh. Help us discover it, won't you?" Invasive #1 is currently slated to hit shelves in December 2023.
Many horror stories promise to unveil the stuff of nightmares within their pages, but for Cullen Bunn, that is very much true for this new particular tale. In an exclusive statement, Bunn had this to say:
“INVASIVE is a thing of nightmare. For me, literally. The initial seed of the idea sprang from a terrifying nightmare that startled me awake in the dark. While developing the idea, I was beset by even more nightmares. And while writing it? You guessed it. Nightmares. It's a book that worries and haunts me, and I think it represents a bit of a signpost in the road of my approach to horror in general. I believe that in the years to come, it will be thought of as one of my most disturbing stories.”
Invasive not only promises readers more of Cullen Bunn's signature nightmarish pen but also insight into what scares Bunn on a personal level. Bunn has delivered some of the most terrifying works of fiction within the comic book medium. He has given readers classics like the Harrow County franchise, Blood Feud, and Unholy Grail, among many other works. And yet, this is the work that "haunts" Bunn to this day.
"Invasive might very well go down as Cullen Bunn's ultimate statement on what the horror comic can and should be. As both a mystery and meditation on the addictive nature of power, Invasive is one of the most compelling, thought-provoking, and genuinely rattling projects that I have ever had the privilege to shepherd forward,” said Oni Press President and Publisher Hunter Gorinson. “We can't share too much for fear of spoiling what Cullen and Jesús have planned, except to say this: No matter what you think...you are not ready."
For this to be the story that disturbs Bunn himself implies that this could very well be the scariest series that Bunn has ever produced. In addition, those who helped back The Sixth Gun on Kickstarter will get a rare Invasive ashcan via Kickstarter. As a secret Stretch Goal for the ongoing campaign, the Invasive #1 ashcan serves as a top-secret, limited-edition bonus item that will be automatically awarded to all physical backers at the Tier 3 level or higher! Fans of Cullen Bunn don't want to miss this as Oni Press will release Invasive #1 in December, with more information on the project expected to release in the coming months.
I’m not kidding. This one is DARK, but I think you’re gonna love it!
