Nightmare Fuel, Issue 236

Nightmare Fuel, Issue 236

If you had been in my studio the last couple of weeks… if you had been listening outside my office door… you would have hard me talking to myself for hours on end. That’s because I’ve been in the middle of a big novel re-write project, and during the re-write stage of the game, I like to read everything out lout, just to make sure I’ve got the pacing and cadence just right.

It might also be because I’ve driven myself mad.

It seems that, during the re-write phase, I decided to add something like 40,000 unexpected words to BONES OF OUR STARS, BLOOD OF OUR WORLD.

As you might imagine, this loaded a ton of extra work on my shoulders. I’m happy with the way things have turned out—so far—but I’m definitely taking the project down to the wire. As you read this, I’m working on wrapping the project up and sending it to my editor.

My personal deadline is “end of day” on October 1st—and that’s today!

Wish me luck!

Because I’ve been overwhelmed by the novel, I’ve let the last few issues of the newsletter slide. I apologize for that, but something simply had to give. I have been publishing Cullen Bunn’s Spinner Rack of Doom, which just gives a quick update on comics coming out every Wednesday, but my beloved Nightmare Fuel had to take a back seat temporarily.

The last few weeks have given me some time to think about this newsletter, too. Now that I’m getting back into the swing of things, I’ve been considering changing newsletter platforms again.

Don’t worry, as a current subscriber, you shouldn’t see a noticeable change. It’s mainly for me, for ease of use, for opening communications, and to save a little money.

A new interview about my upcoming series THE HEXILES has dropped on Dynamic Forces!

Cullen Bunn Brings Real Horror, Real Dread Dripping From the Pages of THE HEXILES.

Just about the only thing I’ve been working on the last few weeks has been BONES OF OUR STARS, BLOOD OF OUR WORLD, but there have been some other interesting developments, too. I’ve had a few really great meetings in the last couple of weeks. There are still a few decisions to be made and contracts to be signed, but those meetings will result in several new comic book series over the next twelve months.

I’ve also taken over the role of Marketing Director for my local convention—Tremendicon. I believe in the convention’s goals and charity-focused endeavors, and I truly think I can help them reach greater heights of success. One of my first initiatives was to create a newsletter focused on the event. Even if you’re not in our area, I think the newsletter might be of interest to you, as it is filled with fun, inspirational content.

Speaking of Tremendicon, our next Whiskey and Words event is tomorrow night, Wednesday, October 2, at Best of Luck Beer Hall in Springfield, MO. If you’re in the area, it’s a fun event! You should join us!

As you know (or probably could have guessed), October is my favorite time of year, and I’m planning on packing as much as possible into spooky season this time around.

Of course, my trivia team—Shakma 2000–will rise from the grave once more, starting this week.

Haunted houses are on the agenda. I’ve already attended one haunted forest with my son, and I’ve got some more local haunted houses to attend. My son, some of his friends, and I are also taking a road trip to some bigger haunted attractions.

TERRIFIER 3 comes out next week, and tickets have already been attained.

Some friends of mine are already planning on getting together for a screening of the movie HAPPY HALLOWEEN.

And the university symphony orchestra (of which my son is a part) will be performing the score to NOSFERATU while the movie plays.

There are a couple of convention trips rounding out my Halloween festivities, too!

This week, I’ll be heading to St. Louis to attend SCARES THAT CARE AUTHORCON. If you haven’t read up on this amazing convention, definitely check it out. Not only is the guest line-up something special, but their charitable support is truly heart-warming. The event takes place October 4 - 6 at the Renaissance Hotel.

I don’t THINK we’re going to be doing a haunted garage at my house this year. I think my son may be at that age where other plans take precedence. That makes me a little sad, but it might also be a nice opportunity to relax a bit on Halloween night itself.

What else do I have panned? I’m not sure yet, but…more, by God, more, more, MOOOOOOOORRRE!

CRUEL UNIVERSE #3

Once you were an innocent child, beloved by your parents and esteemed by your peers. You built a career and a family, and even found time for your poetry. But none of that matters now. Your sun has just gone supernova and reduced your world to a glowing cinder. So pretty. So red. 'Twas a sight while it lasted. Over now. BUT AT LEAST WE GET TO KEEP THIS COMIC AS A SOUVENIR! This month in the world's most existentially devastating comic magazine: The otherworldly talents of Cullen Bunn and David Rubin, J. Holtham and Kano, and Zac Thompson and Dan McDaid begin a manned expedition to the extremes of human existence and imagine the terrifying possibilities of what to expect when the best of intentions meet the cold, hard reality of our worst instincts. For the discerning reader that demands science fiction that stings, we give you CRUEL UNIVERSE!

At long last, I officially have a story coming out under the EC banner! I couldn’t be more excited! And I’m thrilled with the way my story, titled “Behave” turned out!

With my schedule over the last few weeks, it’s been difficult to just take some time out and enjoy myself. I did manage to slip away for a late-night viewing of THE SUBSTANCE and… wow. It’s a movie I’ve been thinking about a lot in the last several days. A friend of mine said he admired “the audacity” of the flick, especially in the final act, and I think that’s a fair assessment. For me, the movie seemed to be  a Cronenberged version of an 80s exercise movie like PERFECT. Up to a point. Once we reach that point, it leans more into the realm of Brian Yuzna’s SOCIETY. I like movies in which strange rules must be followed in order to avoid ghastly consequences. The cast is terrifc. The look of the movie is top-notch. It sticks with you, that’s for sure.
