Nightmare Fuel, Issue 245

Nightmare Fuel, Issue 245

This one is going out a little later than planned thanks to some unexpected internet issues. Sorry about that.

I’ve been thinking a lot about health and mortality this week, partially because my friend got hurt in Chicago, partially because I just haven’t felt like myself, partially because I’ve been eating (both stress-eating and celebratory eating) like a monster for the last week.

But December brings with it a new attitude and a new drive…

…and salads.

So many salads.

Let’s get some damage done.

I woke up Thanksgiving morning with a need to go through the details of all the work I’ve currently got on my plate. As per usual, some of these projects haven’t been officially announced, so I’ll have to be a little secretive here and there.

  • BONES OF OUR STARS, BLOOD OF OUR WORLD (Gallery) - The novel has been written and turned in. I’m sure there will be some edits/rewrites.

  • GOBLINVILLE (Outland Entertainment) - Two of the novellas in the series have been written. They need some edits. I started thinking a lot about the next book in the series recently.

  • OUR BRILLIANT RUIN (Dark Horse) - My work on this is done aside from lettering passes and such.

  • JUMPSCARE (Dark Horse) - My work on this is done aside from minor approvals and such. I am creating a creator-exclusive cover, which I’m excited about.

  • PROJECT: BADGE (Unannounced) - I’ve written this entire series and I imagine I’m done save for lettering passes.

  • DIABLO (Titan) - I’m in the middle of writing this one. A couple of issue’s are written, a couple outlined and waiting on approval.

  • GATCHAMAN (Mad Cave) - I’m wrapping up the second arc right now.

  • PROJECT: ONE LAST TIME (Unannounced) - I’ve written half of this series and will be wrapping the rest pretty soon.

  • PROJECT: HERO (Unannounced) - This is a short OGN, superhero/thriller. I’ve outlined it, but will start scripting soon.

  • PROJECT: WITCHCRAFT (Unannounced) - This is a short OGN horror yarn. I’ve outlined it, but will start scripting soon.

  • PROJECT: GARDEN (Unannounced) - This is a short OGN, horror/thriller. I’ve finished all the writing, but art hasn’t started on it yet.

  • PROJECT: KINGDOM (Unannounced) - A follow-up series to one of my other creator-owned books.

  • PROJECT: SHADOW (Unannounced) - This one is a series. I’m working with the licensor and outlining all of the issues before scripting.

  • PROJECT: DRIVE (Unannounced) - Very early stages, but I imagine I’ll have this one underway soon.

  • WRATHBORN (Outland Entertainment) - This one will continue, but there are some significant changes in the mix for the future.

  • THE FARAWAY (Outland Entertainment) - This one will continue, but there are some significant changes in the mix for the future.

In many ways, the projects listed above are preambles to what comes next, which includes:

  • PROJECT: DOWNPOUR (Unannounced) - Excited about this one. I’ve written the first script, getting started on the next one.

  • PROJECT: GRINDHOUSE (Unannounced) - I haven’t started this one (aside from the initial outline) but I’m excited to get to it.

  • PROJECT: REMAIN (Unannounced) - I haven’t started this one (aside from the initial outline) but I’m excited to get to it.

By the end of the year, I want/need to have several of these projects off the list completely. That sounds ALMOST like a Scriptpocalypse, but I don’t want to call it that. Instead, I just need to buckle down and stay keenly focused for the next few work days. It’s pretty remarkable what can be accomplished if I just minimize distractions (like internet issues) and focus.

I tend to work (at least a little) every day of the week. If I write just 5 pages a day (which is, for me, a pretty light workload), that’s 35 pages a week. That’s 140 pages a month. 140 pages is more than six 22-page comic issues. A graphic novel’s worth of script… in a month. Not bad. Let’s say I bump that output to 10 pages a day (not outside the realm of possibility at all). That’s 70 pages a week, 280 a month. That’s over 12 issues of comics.

In a month.

(For those of you who want to write comics but struggle to find the time, if you even wrote 1 comic page a day, you’d have more than an issue’s worth of a comic finished in a month.)

But, December aside, I don’t think I’ll need to write so many pages of comics a day. I should be able to work at a much more deliberate pace. In fact, though the tradition has powered much of my writing for the last few years, I’m officially retiring Scriptpocalypse as of 2025.

Goodbye, Scriptpocalypse.

In a weird way, I’ll miss you.

In much more healthy way, I will not.

It feels like it wasn’t long ago that I was sharing pictures of kittens on this newsletter. Time—and kittens—being a flat circle, it looks like I’m back at it again. While I was out of town last week, a new kitten found its way into my house. She’s only a month old, and she’s had to fend for herself at least some of her life. Now, she’s making herself at home. For a bit, we have to keep her isolated. She’s not quite old enough for blood work to make sure she’s 100% healthy. She’s a brave, sweet kitten. Her name is Betty.

Also… that image of the Hungry Beast from TerrorVision I sued above? It could be applied to this little critter, too.

DOOR BY DOOR, NIGHT BY NIGHT, Volume 3

The last time our sales crew met the dreaded Lamashtu, their lives were changed forever. Now the demon is back, nesting in another small town, abducting children. When the crew runs afoul of the monster this time, there’s a good chance none of them will survive. Will this be the last door they knock on?

Collects issues #8-12 of the smash 12-issue series!

This is a weird one for a number of reasons. First, it collects issues 8 - 12, but the final issues of the series were NEVER published in singles. Those stories appear here for the first time. This is the only way to read the whole story. Second, I keep getting mixed signals on the release dates. It MIGHT come out this week, but it might come out in March! I mention it here just in case!

THE SHOCK SHOP - My online store, where you can find exclusive covers you can only get directly from me!

PATREON - Here, I post a serialized novel, a serialized comic book, short stories, and other cool materials.

THE CULLEN BUNN DISCORD SERVER - A place for fans to hang out and talk about comics, books, movies, games, collecting, and whatever else strikes their fancy.

MY AMAZON AUTHOR PAGE - Listen. You should always shop at your local comic and bookstore first, but if they don’t carry the books you want, you might be able to get them here. And, if nothing else, leave some reviews of the books you love!
