I’m so freaking stoked about this book. I’ve been cooking it up for a while now, and I think you’re really going to dig it. It’s a new endeavor for me, my first full-length adult horror novel. I think it’s pretty creepy, and my agent said he had to keep the lights on while reading it. Of course, you MUST keep the lights on while reading. How can you see the pages otherwise? But I know what he meant! Thanks to Charlie for helping me get this moving to Ed for taking a chance on the project. This book is part of what I’m now calling the 2024 Five—five big, unexpected, game-changing projects that I’m tackling this year. Stay with me and stay tuned. I’ll post hints of BONES OF OUR STARS, BLOOD OF OUR WORLD and of the 2024 Five as I can! One of the other five projects will be officially announced soon, I imagine.

I spent a decent chunk of time this week trying to figure out Planet Comicon. This is the first big convention of the year for me, and getting the right mix of stock to bring is important. I’ve been sorting books, ordering books, preparing BEYOND MORTAL sticker packs, sorting Bunngalow stickers, and generally trying to be more prepared for the convention than I’ve been in the past. I know the show is still a few weeks away, but I need it to be a success! I’ll be posting my table location, panel schedule, and pricing of exclusive items soon!

This old chestnut…
I’ve been thinking a lot about my health the last few days. I’m not getting any younger and I’m definitely not taking care of myself the way I should. Especially not the last couple of weeks. I tend to do well for a week or so, then backslide in a major, major way.
I need to keep reminding myself that I FEEL better when I’m eating right and exercising. Not sure why that is so hard to remember. My mental health, well, that may have run away with the spoon a long time ago. But I’m gonna do my absolute best to shape up and take care of myself.
So… the next time you see me eating eight Big Macs, feel free to slap those all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and sesame seed buns right out of my hand.

I’m still digging the new season of TRUE DETECTIVE, though I haven’t watched this week’s episode just yet. Instead, I watched the Super Bowl.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Foo Fighters and Don Williams.
I also thought I’d share some other news or projects that you should be keeping an eye on. I’ll try to call out two or three items every newsletter.
First up, my arch-nemesis Dennis Hopeless is putting out a new comic that is simply fantastic. It’s a fictionalized account of true events, and you’ll love it. The first issue of the series—SHE’S RUNNING ON FUMES—is out now. I had the chance to read the entire series. And, while the year is young, it’s gonna be hard to beat for my favorite comic of 2024.
Next is KONTRA AGAINST EVIL, the first issue of which is on Kickstarter right now. This is the debut of an original, six issue Filipino graphic novel, written by indie author NP Alfaro and illustrated by award-winning comic artists Borg Sinaban and Azam Raharjo. I think it sounds great and the sample pages I saw look terrific. I backed it right away.
And, finally, writers Mary SanGiovanni and Brian Keene have opened a bookstore of their own. VORTEX BOOKS AND COMICS is located in Columbia PA. It JUST opened! And I know Mary and Brian have big plans for it. You should check it out if you’re within driving distance! If not, check out their website and online store!

Behold the glory of North Carolina chicken and barbecue. This was… last year… in Charlotte. Smithfield’s Chicken and BBQ is the only place in Charlotte to get REAL North Carolina barbecue. When is there gonna be a big comic convention in Wilson? I mean, I haven’t been to Parker’s in a looooong time.
Also… see above about my health.
Slapping a Big Mac out of my hand is one thing, but I would turn into a were-badger if you tried to take my BBQ.
